This is Pokey LaFarge. He’s bringing sexy back … 1920’s style.
Check out this interview and performance. He plays Ragtime Blues.

pokey is the shit! thanks for doin this video bill!
I really like his voice. Good stuff!
it’s an interesting sound, I heard a mix of bluegras in there as well…..but what really surprised me was his voice….the lad has got pipes that is for sure…
Great post! Glad to meet Pokey and can’t wait to poke my way through the rest of your postings. This is exactly the kind of vidcast I love. Glad to meet you at SXSW.
Thanks for the visit to ragtime blues, Pokey has a good style to his fingerpicking. I love that guitar sound.
Thanks for filming Pokey – haven’t heard of him before, but I’m definitely gonna check out more. I usually lean more towards this Mississippi Hill Country style, but I dig what this guy is doing!
Man, and I thought Pokey LaFarge was the engineer on the Starship Enterprise and the guy from Reading Rainbow… Shows what I know. Love the pickin’, love the grinnin’ and love the politics.
Bill… This was great. A mix of Delta Blues and the “hot jazz” that was popular in France from the late 20s to WWII. And it kind of goes well with your piece on the Carolina Chocalte Drops. Good stuff!
Definitely gonna hit Cdbaby up for his CD.
Great video, Streeter, keep the shit up.
Pokey LaFarge is the fucking man. Great post Bill! You are doing a great service to us all.
reminds me a lot of some old taj majal. i am studying some the old finger pickin blues styles. guess he beat me to it. im from louisville too.
thanks for putting out the video of pokey. that cat’s just fine…
he’s playing Sunday Sept. 9th at the Beale…word.
This boy has a ton of soul! The real deal…Origional Blues! The kinda Blues that was being played on the levy’s in the barrel houses that made old St. louis famous back in the day.
Just so you know, I know this guy, and everything he does is fake and calculated. There is nothing pure about it, which is the sad thing.
Bob Dylan was Bob Dylan and Woody was Woody, and it’s something that can’t be forced.
You mean that Pokey isn’t really form the 1920’s?
I had no idea.
Thanks for clearing that up!
Steve’s wrong. I know Pokey too. Sure his outfit is chosen, not just thrown together and I’m still working on what mama names her boy “Pokey”, but he is true to his way and to his music. Now as far as “pure” is concerned, after a few drinks “purity” is purely relative. 😉
wonderful. I’m happy to see that american roots music is alive and well in St. Louis.
THis guy is an amazing talent. I am completely blown away at the authentic, and complex riffs.
Steve’s an idiot, while he’s wearing out that Abercrombie shirt, POkey’s blowing folks minds everyday on the road. Great vid.
